Database refresher by Ullas in Tuesday's class
Folks:
According to the survey about your saturday availability, 8/18 were
available this saturday; 13/18 were available on 3rd April and 12/18 on
24th. So, I went with plan C--> which involves using Tuesday class for
database refresher; and keeping the option of a separate extra class later
in the semester open.
So, here is the plan for Tuesday.
On Tuesday, there will be a regular class meeting--where Ullas Nambiar will
do a recitation/refresher on Databases (specifically, the part of the
databases that everyone needs to know to go about effectively for the rest
of the course). The slides will be drawn from
http://rakaposhi.eas.asu.edu/cse494/notes/rao-db-1.ppt
He will discuss the ideas of "schema", "tables with attributes as rows and
tuples as columns"; table/relatioanl operations
(projection, selection and join queries), a quick overview of SQL as a
query language for databases.
This may be sort of a "refresher/repeat" for people who took a full
database course already--but in the past, students appreciated a quick
one-class overview. So, I would encourage all of you to attend.

On Thursday, I will assume that you know db concepts and start off with
issues brought up by the presence of DBs on the web (ullas may bring up
some of this by way of motivation too).
