Ron Graham is a well known mathematician (wrote the "Concrete Math" book with Knuth). (He is also a close associate of Erdoch--according to a popular bio of Erdoch.. and not surprisingly has an erdoch number of 1). He will be delivering the math awareness lecture tomorrow. It is likely to be fun for most CS students. Rao [Apr 11, 2001] ps: here is a page on Ron Graham http://math.ucsd.edu/~fan/ron/

Hello.
A few more details on Thursday's Math Awareness Lecture:
Speaker: Dr. Ron Graham, UCSD
Title: Searching for the Shortest Network
Time: Thursday, April 12, 7:00pm
Place: Murdock 201, NW Corner of Palm Walk and Orange Street
Abstract: Suppose you are given some set of cities and you would like
to connect them all together with a network with the shortest possible
length. How hard is it to find such a short network? This classical
problem has challenged mathematicians for nearly two centuries, and today
has great relevance in such diverse areas as telecommunication networks,
design of VLSI chips, and molecular phylogenetics. In this talk we will
summarize past accomplishments, present activities, and future challenges
in this fascinating topic.Refreshments will be served outside the lecture hall after the talk.
