This is for a leadership position in Ocean Sciences and Engineering at a
non-profit in the Washington DC area, and is unique in that it will have
a substantial influence on how the Oceanography will be done in the
coming decade.

The JOI (see below) is funded by NSF and ties in directly to one of the
largest NSF funded projects ever (within/without Oceanography). Having
an AI person there would be significant since ORION and Project NEPTUNE
have substantial undersea robotics capability but little in terms of
Automated Reasoning and/or Data Mining, Knowledge Mgmt. or Model-Based
Reasoning, disciplines where the AI community at large and the
Planning/Scheduling community in particular, can have a substantial
impact.

Director, Cyberinfrastructure for Ocean Observing Systems

Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI), a consortium of 20 major
oceanographic research institutions, seeks an individual with
significant leadership experience in the development and implementation
of distributed sensing and information systems to serve as Director,
Cyberinfrastructure for Ocean Observing Systems for the Ocean Research
Interactive Observatory Networks (ORION) program (www.orionprogram.org
<http://www.orionprogram.org/> ). The goal of ORION is to deliver an
interactive, globally distributed and integrated sensor network to
enable next-generation research of the complex, interlinked physical,
chemical, biological, and geological processes operating within marine
systems.

This position is the leadership position responsible for development of
the cyberinfrastructure within the ORION management team. The successful
candidate will have the unique opportunity to work with the national and
international oceanographic communities and e-Science programs to
establish a coherent twenty year vision of the cyberinfrastructure needs
for ocean research observing facilities. Related programs include the
Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), the North East Pacific
Time-series Undersea Networked Experiment (NEPTUNE) Canada, the
Laboratory for the Ocean Observatory Knowledge INtegration Grid
(LOOKING), the NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) and the National
Laboratory for Advanced Data Research (NLADR). Working with the Project
Office Director and the ORION Cyberinfrastructure Management Committee,
the position will provide overall direction, guidance, and leadership
for the development and execution of ORION sensing, information and data
management systems. Success in this position will require an ability to
work well with a diverse range of people, ranging from field scientists
to information technology specialists, and to independently plan and
execute projects while coordinating with other ORION activities.

The centerpiece of the ORION Program is the Ocean Observatories
Initiative, an ambitious plan to develop and install $300 M of observing
infrastructure to support basic marine research. The supporting
cyberinfrastructure will be commensurate with a program of this
magnitude. The successful candidate will possess leadership and
interpersonal skills critical for successful collaboration, an advanced
degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer sciences or electrical
engineering), a minimum of 10 years experience in information technology
research or data management applications, demonstrated success in
project and program management and a willingness to relocate to
Washington DC (this may be negotiable). A familiarity with scientific
ocean observing activities and National Science Foundation program
procedures is desirable, as is the commitment to enhance cooperation
between ocean observing and other large-scale, ocean and Earth science
research initiatives.
