Subject: ASU 101 Webinar this fall for your students

ASU 101 Instructors,

 

I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting a webinar in a few weeks for all ASU101-FSE students that I hope you will take advantage of in your ASU 101 class.  This will be a great opportunity for students to participate in a webinar, perhaps in place of a regularly scheduled class OR as a homework assignment.  Students are encouraged to attend the webinar in person (limited seating) OR via the internet. The webinar will be given by Dr. Brad Allenby, on the topic of “Engineering the Future”.   The presentation will remain accessible at the link provided below after the presentation has ended also, thus students who cannot attend  ‘live’ may view the recorded presentation at a later time.

"You Want the Future?  You Can't Handle the Future!"   by Dr. Brad Allenby

We live on the first terraformed planet that we know of anywhere in the universe.  Humans are changing the climate, the nitrogen and phosphorous cycles, and the water cycle; they are urbanizing and changing themselves, their biologies, and their environment at all scales; they are designing organisms genetically, and designing robots that work like organisms.   And the critical mechanism for all this activity is technology - especially the "Five Horsemen": nanotechnology, biotechnology, information and communication technology, robotics, and applied cognitive science.  Taken as a whole, today's world poses unprecedented complexity, challenges and opportunities for engineering, and for engineers - and for today's engineering student.  So . . . you want the future!?  You can't handle the future!  But you can, perhaps, help design it.

 

About the presenter:  Braden R. Allenby is Lincoln Professor of Engineering and Ethics; President’s Professor of Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering, and of Law; Founding Chair of the Consortium for Emerging Technologies, Military Operations, and National Security; and Founding Director of the Center for Earth Systems Engineering and Management, at Arizona State University.  He moved to ASU from his previous position as the Environment, Health and Safety Vice President for AT&T in 2004.  Dr. Allenby received his BA from Yale University, his JD and MA (economics) from the University of Virginia, and his MS and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University.   His areas of expertise include emerging technologies, especially in the military and security domains; Design for Environment; industrial ecology; sustainable engineering; transhumanism; and earth systems engineering and management. In 2008 he was selected by the Carnegie Foundation as 2008 Arizona Professor of the Year, and in 2012 he was appointed as a President’s Professor at ASU.
